In case of a tie, the contestants get one additional minute. If there still is a tie, each contestant gets three swings, and repeats on ties thereafter. In the final round, the finalists get two minutes. A "home run" in the context of the competition, consists of hitting a baseball in fair territory out of the playing field on the fly.
HOW TO READ THE MLB HOME RUN DERBY BETTING ODDS
Some notable performances in the Derby include Bobby Abreu in 2005, who won the Derby with a then-record 41 homers, including a then-record 24 in the first round. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. broke the first-round record in 2019 with 29 home runs. He broke that record in the following round, hitting 40 home runs in 2 tiebreakers. The previous overall record was set in 2016 by Giancarlo Stanton, who finished with a total of 61 home runs, defeating Todd Frazier in the final round.
It differs from a home run hit during legal gameplay in that the batter is not competing against a pitcher and a defensive team attempting to make an out. In the Home Run Derby, all pitches are purposefully thrown slowly and at a closer range than the official 60 feet 6 inches (18.44 m) distance, usually by a coach behind a pitching screen. In addition, like batting practice, the batter remains in the batter's box after each swing, and does not run, nor circle the bases to score a run. The format was changed, with the 8 participants being seeded 1 to 8 and facing off head-to-head in a bracket, with the winner advancing to the next round.

Notable absences included those of New York Yankees sluggers Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge. The first round battle between Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani was an epic one, requiring two tiebreakers, with Soto connecting on all three of his swings in the second of the tiebreakers. Meanwhile, Pete Alonso set a record with his 35 dingers in the first round, the destroyed Soto in the second round, exceeding his total with almost a minute left to go, all the while multiplying the tape-measure shots. He faced dark horse Trey Mancini in the final round, whose presence there was already a triumph after his overcoming cancer. But Mancini was not going to roll over before the Alonso steamroller as he blasted a very impressive 22 long balls in the final round. Still, it was not enough, as Alonso seemed to top him effortlessly, blasting five consecutive balls into the depths of Coors Field in the bonus round to defend his title in very impressive style.
The 17,000 supposedly represents the number of State Farm Agents across the country. The format of the competition has changed regularly, as MLB tried to maximize excitement and encourage its top sluggers to take part. As a result, it is not really possible to compare results across eras. Recorded only five of ten outs before hitting winning home run. Recorded only seven of ten outs before hitting winning home run.

Additionally, the contestants can receive an additional 30 seconds of bonus time if they hit at least one home run that equals or exceeds 475 ft (144.78 m) during regulation. A home run will count if the timer hits zero, so long as the pitch was released beforehand. If the second contestant in the matchup exceeds their opponents home run total, the round ends. Topps Update Series #U-148 Pete Alonso (2019 MLB Home Run Derby) (NM-MT)
The event has grown significantly from its roots in the 1980s, when it was not televised. Prior to 1991, the Home Run Derby was structured as a two-inning event with each player receiving five outs per inning, allowing for the possibility of ties. It is now one of the most-watched events broadcast on ESPN. The contestants have three minutes in the first and second rounds and two minutes in the final round to hit as many home runs as possible. The timer begins with the release of the first pitch, and the round ends when the timer hits zero.
In 2015, the format was changed again, with hitters being placed into a bracket and going head-to-head with an opponent from the rival league. Batters now had five minutes to hit as many homers as possible, with no account being taken of balls that did not go for homers. Home runs stopped the clock, which restarted after an out or a swing and miss, and sluggers were given bonus time for particularly long homers.
The American League easily won the competition between the leagues, with 116 homers to 75. The format remained the same for the third straight year. However, as there were five players from the National League competing against three American Leaguers, the NL's big lead in total homers was almost a foregone conclusion. The NL won the competition between the leagues, 124 to 66.
Alonso set a new first round record with 35 home runs in the first round. Ohtani and Soto went to a swing-off in the first round after tying with six home runs in the tie breaker. Soto prevailed by a score of 3-0 after Ohtani failed to hit a home run with his first swing. Ties in any round are broken by a 60-second tiebreaker with no bonus time or timeouts. If a tie remains, the contestants will engage in successive three-swing swing-offs until there is a winner. At both the 2005 and 2006 derbies, Century 21 - a real estate company - sponsored a charity tie-in with the event.
The rules changed once again in 2006, when total home runs replaced round by round totals. The top four hitters in the first round advanced to the semifinals, and their home run total from the first round carried into the semifinals. The two players with the most home runs in the semifinals (which included the player's first round clouts) advanced to the finals.
